We are the Hollenberger Family: John, Jennifer, Cameron (6), Cara Jane (4) and Callahan (2). We love camping, running, eating pizza and sleeping in! As you know, our family is expanding through adoption! We are in the process of adopting a little boy from Colombia, to be the youngest member of our clan!
For Jennifer, adoption was something that was on her heart at a young age. Her mom remembers Jenn saying she was going to adopt a child with special needs, and today it is coming to fruition. Early in our marriage, Jennifer and I discussed adoption and the idea lingered in the back of our minds for many years.
The defining moment for me, when I knew that we would become adoptive parents, was during an event at our church called, Expo. We listened to a story about one young woman’s journey through foster care. One thing she said has stuck with me; she said that to her “a family was overrated”. To her a “family causes pain and disappoints you and lets you down”. Hearing this broke my heart. I grew up in a loving family. We went on adventures together and camped all over the east coast. I couldn’t imagine feeling that way about a family.
This young woman’s feeling about family changed when she was taken home by her foster parents, her forever family.
The expo opened our eyes and our hearts. We were both suddenly burdened for children, in the US and around the world, who did not know the love of a family.
Psalm 82:3 says, “Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed”. We believe that, for our family, obeying this scripture means we will adopt. Our adoption will cost about $40,000. We are thankful to report we have met 50% of that goal, to date, however, we are still needing to raise another $12,000.
